New Book: Core Spring 5 Certification in Detail

By | June 19, 2018
Reading Time: 2 minutes

It has been a long time since, but I am happy to announce the availability of a new book that I am in the process of writing:

Core Spring 5 Certification in Detail

Core Spring 5 Certification in Detail book cover.

Core Spring 5 Certification in Detail book cover.

This book goes through each of the topics as described in the Core Spring 5.0 Certification Study Guide as published by Pivotal. I try to answer each of the questions and explain in further detail where needed.

The book is organized in the following the following major sections:

Section Status
Container, Dependency and IoC 100% finished
Aspect Oriented Programming 100% finished
Data Management: JDBC, Transactions, JPA, Spring Data 100% finished
Spring Boot 100% finished
Spring MVC and the Web Layer 100% finished
Security 100% finished
REST 100% finished
Testing 100% finished

With this book I am also undertaking an experiment, which I have contemplated for some time, publishing the book at an online publisher.

Update: The book has been moved to Kobo and is no longer available on Leanpub.

While the book can be downloaded for free, you can chose to pay up to USD 20 (plus any VAT if you live in the EU) and contribute to my book-writing and blogging. If you do chose to pay for the book, LeanPub have a 45-day customer satisfaction guarantee enabling you to get a refund according to the terms here.
Note that while you may obtain the book for free, you are not allowed to distribute it to others.

At the moment the book is only available as a PDF but I will attempt to produce other formats.

Happy learning and coding!

    Hi Ivan,

If I download the book and pay now/today and after sometime when the book is fully finished, I can download it again (for free) right? Sorry. If my question sounds stupid. I’m not sure how LeanPub works.

      Hello!
I was not totally clear about this myself either when I bought my first book on LeanPub.
Yes, you will get all future updates to the book for free. When I publish a new version, I always send a mail (through LeanPub) to the readers who have chosen to receive such updates – so please be careful to do so if you want to receive notifications about updates!
      Happy coding!

Yes, my book covers the last Core Spring certification – for version 5 of the Spring Framework.
      Good luck with the certification!

    Hi, Ivan!
I’ve skimmed over your Spring Certification book and saw that you provide XML based configuration samples along with Java based, even though official certification study guide doesn’t explicitly asks about XML based config. Did you encounter such questions during real Spring 5 Certification exam?
    Thanks in advance.

      Hello!
No, I did not encounter XML configuration in neither the course I attended nor the certification test.
      Good luck!

    Hi,
What is the expected date of finishing the whole book?
How do you compare Pivotal Spring 5 exam with Oracle Java 8 exam?

      Hello!
Sorry, I cannot say an expected date when the book will be finished. I can say that there is not much left – the chapter on testing will be the shortest of all the chapters since there are fewer questions in the curriculum.
In addition, I cannot compare the Spring certification to the Oracle Java 8 certification simply because I have not taken the Oracle Java 8 certification!
For my thoughts on the Spring 5 certification, please see my post about Core Spring 5 – Training and Certification here on this blog.
      Happy coding!

Thank you for your reply! And let me ask you few more questions.

        1) Perhaps you can compare Pivotal Spring 5 with some older Oracle Java exam? I just want to know whether it is more or less difficult in general… Is it very important to me and your input would be most valuable!

        2) What other resources except your book can you recommend as a preparation? Official training is out of the question as it is way too expensive for me?

        3) Are exam questions more detailed and difficult than content of Spring in Action (5th edition)?

And yes, I’ve read your post on Spring 5 training and certification. I just would like to know more.

          Hello again!
          1) The Core Spring 5 exam is difficult, but all the questions (that I encountered) are sensible and will test knowledge, not memorization.
          2) Write your own exam preparation document. This has helped me to deepen my knowledge tremendously. Go trough the curriculum and answer the questions. I did take the training but you have to work with the material regardless – the training is only 4 days.
          3) I haven’t read Spring In Action, sorry.
          Good luck!

Spring In Action (5th edition) covers lots of topics which are not required by Spring Certification 5.0. In my opinion 4th edition of this book is better choice (but remember what Ivan said about xml-configuration – it seems that knowledge of xml-configuration isn’t required) plus this ‘certification-in-detail’ book plus spring reference documentation.
P.S. I’ll take exam soon, this was actually my preparation plan (plus tons of actually written code by myself).
P.S.S. In my opinion ‘spring certification in detail’ by Ivan Kriszan is the most valuable book actually written (though not finished ATM). Don’t stick with certification book written by Iuliana Cosmina – it’s poorly written.

Thanks a lot for your help! I’ve made a decision – will take this exam this year;-)

Last question, what books should I go through as a preparation, what is your recommendation? What resources do you know that are comprehensive and touch exam topics deeply enough? My experience with Spring is about 2 years so I know I need to learn a lot;-)

Yes, I will buy your book as soon as it will be fully finished…

Thank you again, your input is most valuable!

Well, if you do not mind taking your time, then I suggest writing your own examples for each area in which you feel you need to deepen your knowledge. Go through the curriculum, perhaps even use my book, and whenever there is something you feel that you are not entirely clear on, write a little example program. At least that is what I do/did when writing the book although I decided on not publishing all the code since it would require a lot of additional work on my behalf.

The book looks very good, a lot of questions with easy to follow answers. I have just one remark, it’s a PDF file which is not very Kindle friendly. Although it’s not finished I do recommend it!
